Torrance Fire Auxiliary Program

The Torrance Fire Department Auxiliary program provides Fire Academy graduates an opportunity to apply their acquired skills and gain insight while preparing for a fire service career.  The Auxiliary Fire Fighter position is a one-year volunteer (non-paid) commitment for a maximum number of 7 Auxiliary's (one for each day of the week).  The auxiliary Fire Fighter works one 24-hour shift per week.  Auxiliary Fire Fighters respond to emergencies, assist with Fire Prevention inspections, and maintains apparatus, equipment, and station.   Auxiliary Fire Fighters also participate with training and public education.  The Auxiliary Fire Fighter will be expected to perform miscellaneous duties and drive department utility vehicles. 

The Minimum Requirements to become an Auxiliary Fire Fighter:

· 18 years old
· Graduate of a State Recognized Fire Academy
· Current EMT Certificate
· Valid California Drivers License (class C)

How to Apply:

Qualified applicants must submit an application package.  The package consists of a Torrance City Volunteer Application and a one-page autobiography.  The autobiography should include your education, experience, and skills that apply to the fire service.  The application package can be obtained at any of the Torrance Fire Stations.  Send the completed application package to:

The Selection Process:

When there are openings to be filled the application packages are reviewed and the most qualified applicants will be asked to participate in the testing process.  The maximum time period that an application package will be held is 16 months.
The test consists of a physical performance test and an oral interview.  Those that are proceeding on will receive a background check and medical exam.
After successfully completing the process, the candidate will be invited to a Department orientation.  Shortly after the orientation the new Auxiliaries year begins.
