In its ongoing commitment to provide the best bus service in the South Bay, Torrance Transit recently purchased eight new Low Floor Buses from the GILLIG Corporation. These 40-foot buses come equipped with innovative design functions and a state of the art propulsion system that runs on clean burning diesel. \With wide doors, a generous 36" front aisle width, and a flip out ramp, the GILLIG Low Floor Bus makes boarding and exiting quick and easy, especially for wheelchair users. However, the one feature that riders will notice immediately is the lack of steps to climb when entering the bus. GILLIG designed the bus to lower itself to the curb and invite the riders in. This design feature is of great importance to elderly and physically disabled users, who might have difficulty negotiating steps.
The spacious interior and large windows are passenger friendly. The extra sound insulation and vibration dampening ensure a quiet ride and enhanced comfort.
As mentioned earlier, the engines that power these 40-foot buses run on clean diesel fuel that produces lower emissions. Lower emissions, in turn help to improve the air quality throughout the South Bay.
Torrance Transit placed the new GILLIG Low Floor Buses into service in Fall 2002.
